Hi all,

Just wanted to check in briefly with visitors here.  It’s been a long, strange ride the last year or so, but with so much attention being paid to the topic of energy these days and full-on election season upon us, I feel compelled to start back up with writings here after a rather long hiatus.  There’s a lot to cover these days, from what’s really going on with rising fuel prices both in the long and short term, to the still ongoing (yes, that’s right) nuclear disaster in Japan, to the impacts and ways of dealing with the rather big deal known as climate change that everyone loves to ignore, to delving further into the social patterns and cultural values informing our knowledge and decisions on matters of consequence regarding energy, natural resources, the environment and their relationship to society at large.

For my first new contribution, I’d like to talk a bit about the big squeeze going on at the pump that’s only going to get bigger, why the “drill baby drill” and pipeline-building policies advocated by the right will not contribute meaningfully to mitigating the pain consumers are feeling despite much hyperbolic rhetoric, how we are exacerbating matters through saber-rattling and aggressive policies toward the Middle East, and hopefully, a few things we can do that actually will help should we muster the political wherewithal to do so.

Stay tuned! I’m going to be getting into the habit of updating this site on a more regular basis and look forward to your joining in the discussion.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Taking that Junk…and Packing it in the Trunk!

Posted by wastedenergy on May 28, 2010

Davy Jones’ Foot Locker, I mean…

WE will be going on hiatus for a few days to get a few days of R&R in the capital of the world. We’ll be road tripping early tomorrow morning and even have a piece of tonight’s quesadilla left over to bring along as a wedge against Peak Hunger.

In the meantime, here’s a nice bit of original artistry from over on TOD, which - if you’ve been following me here or are just someone interested in energy - you probably know by now.  I hope you enjoy this little piece of ”dark humor” (I’ll have something like my own version soon).  Ahh, how times have changed.  They have, by the way.  Thanks to eutrophication, overfishing, and of course, other oil spills, many parts of the Gulf of Mexico may be less resilient today than they were in the 1970′s…

Don’t go far…we’ll be right back!  And in the meantime, if you’re already here, and while we’re on the topic of wedges, why not go ahead and check out a few interesting pieces you might have missed?

Hiatus 3/26-3/31

Posted by wastedenergy on March 26, 2010

Just wanted to let avid readers know I’ll be on vacation during the next few days and may or may not have time to add updates during that time.  Regularly scheduled programming will return April 1.  If you find yourself browsing here for whatever reason during the intervening time, I’ll bet there are items you haven’t gotten around to reading (or commenting on) yet, so why not take the time to do so?

Cheers,
WE

Welcome to WastedEnergy!

Posted by wastedenergy on February 19, 2010

This is my first attempt at running my own blog.  I know basically nothing about how to do it, so hopefully it will all work out ok.  I hope you enjoy my musings!  I’ll start by backposting some of my previous writings, so folks who are interested can see what has already been said.

I’ll be focusing mainly on issues related to energy, resources, culture and the environment, and may occasionally deviate into other tangentially related or unrelated topics.

Enjoy!  And don’t forget to leave some comments.

The Way I Are: About The Author

Posted by wastedenergy on February 14, 2010

Jeremy Abramowitz worked for two years for the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), a nonprofit professional education and training association dedicated to “advancing the practice of economically and environmentally sound solid waste management” (http://www.swana.org/), managing the organization’s online technical training program, recruiting speakers to discuss the latest trends and technologies in all areas of solid waste including collection, disposal, recycling, and energy recovery.  He holds a SWANA Certification in the discipline of Municipal Solid Waste Collection Systems and has attended hundreds of webcasts and conference sessions on solid waste-related topics.  He holds a degree in Geography from Dartmouth College, Class of 2007, with a focus in Human-Environment Relations, and he has eight years of experience on nationally competitive high school and college policy debate teams.

In addition to the trash talk, he has always been interested in energy, climate, resource and environment issues and considers it part of both his personal and professional duty both to closely follow developments in these areas and to get the word out (and squash misinformation like a little bug)!
